All That Glisters… (2003) Fanfare for Orchestra
All That Glisters was commissioned by the Shire of Mundaring
to commemorate their centenary year in 2003. Fanfares are, by definition,
loud and active works. However, in thinking about this commission,
I was struck by the serenity and tranquillity of the Mundaring
area, and the waters of the weir itself, and wanted the work to
somehow reflect this sense of space and quiet. In utilising the
most commonly misquoted Shakespeare for the title –“All
that glisters is not gold” I am hoping to link the glistening
waters of the weir and the sparkle of alluvial gold in Kalgoorlie,
just as the pipeline does, and has done for a hundred years.
The first performance was given by the West Australian Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Kevin Field at Mundaring Recreation Ground,
Mundaring, WA on the 1 February 2003.
