Longitude 137

Longitude 137 is a occasional work written as a gift from the people of Western Australia to the people of Japan. The longitudinal line in question runs through both the Aichi prefecture and the centre of the Australian continent – a simple geographical symbol of the long lasting and genuine connection between our 2 countries. The work is based on two very famous folk songs – one from each nation. They are so well known as to not need introduction, but in setting them for this memorable occasion, I have tried to utilise both Australian and Japanese sounds and textures to create a cross cultural sound world that reflects our nations’ abiding friendship.
